Schiphol airport uses beacons for wayfinding

In a much-improved app, the airport is using 2000 beacons to give 5m accuracy for any location in the airport.

Knowing that GPS positioning is not accurate indoors, the airport investigated using bluetooth beacons, eventually placing 2000 of them around the location. The are accurately used to plot the smartphone user’s location right down to 5m, easily enabling wayfinding between any two points in the airport buildings.

The application, used by 16,000 visitors daily, also enhances the visitor experience by providing access to airport and retail shopping information, including money-saving offers. Around 15% of the app users are currently using the wayfinding feature.
